Test Your Survival Equipment!

Congratulations, you have accumulated your Emergency Preparedness gear.  Generators, Solar Gear, Water, Water Filters, Bulk Food, Aqua Pails, Forward Hydration Bags, First Aid Kits, everything is accounted for.   NOW…

Don’t get caught in an emergency situation without knowing how your equipment and gear works.

Watching the mass preparation going on for Hurricane Sandy on the East Coast, you can’t help but wonder why Americans continue to think their safe with a packaged Generator still in the box.   A man and his 7 year old daughter were being interviewed by a reporter doing a cover story on the Massive Hurricane Sandy, set to make landfall within 72 hours.  When asked what the man was doing to prepare for the Natural Disaster, he replied ” we just invested over $800 in a new generator, but it’s still in the box in case we don’t need it.”

Are you serious!  The man purchased the generator; however, he neglected to buy gasoline and oil to RUN the generator.  So, if he needed the item to run his electricity during a power outage, it would be useless to him and his family.  Another costly mistake made by a well intentioned individual.

Let’s run down a short list of prep steps you must take in order to familiarize yourself with your Survival Gear and Emergency items:

1) Generators:  Take the Survival Equipment out of the packaging and be sure to read up on any additional accessories needed to provide functionality of the device.  Generators need oil and Gasoline to run.  Without these items stored, you might as well have save yourself a grand.  Test your Generator-  Run your generator to be certain that it functions properly.  The last thing you need to do is test your equipment during the emotionally charged Emergency situation when our acuity is less than perfect.  Test your Generators and Solar Gear.

2)  Water Filters and Aqua Pails:  All Filter systems, from Aqua Pails, Katadyn, Aquamira,- need to be flushed before first use.  The Sediment inside all water filters must be plushed 2-3 times before the residue is flushed out and clean water runs thru the filter.  Test your Water Filter / Aqua Pail- Be certain you know how your filter is put together and make sure you have accessories to accomodate function.  Aqua Pails will require a container /bucket for the clean water to flow into (maybe a couple of painter stir-sticks to balance the pail), and don’t forget a container to pour contaminated or non-filtered water into the Aqua Pail.  Without these accessories, your filter will not functional.  Test your Water Filters.

3)  Bulk Food / Dehydrated Food:  Having at least a 1-3 month supply of stored food is rule for Emergency situations and Natural Disaster preparation.  Most people that accumulate food preparations neglect to test out their food.  Test out your food- Dehydrated food may have preservatives or ingredients that upset the digestive tract, causing gas and bloating.  For 95 percent of the people out there there is no concern; however, for those 5percent sensitive to certain preservatives, supplementing dehydrated and freeze-dried foods for canned foods such as canned meats, canned fruits and veggies. Being caught in an emergency situation or natural disaster with food that causes discomfort will add to the emotionally charged situation.  Test your Food.

Keep Calm and Carry on my prepared friends.
